Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Insulin so expensive?
Insulin prices are high because three companies dominate the market and a complicated web of middlemen makes distributing insulin convoluted and expensive. Pharmacy benefit managers, insurers, and wholesalers all add costs. The result is a system where patients often pay hundreds of dollars for a vial of insulin that costs only a fraction of that to make.
What is a Biosimilar Insulin?
A biosimilar insulin is the generic version of insulin. A biosimilar works just as well as the original drug. It’s equally safe, effective, and approved by the FDA. The main difference is that it’s not the original patented version. Biosimilars are meant to be more affordable because they cost less to make, but that hasn’t been true for insulin.
What is your current fundraising goal?
We are raising $1,000,000 right now. This money will be invested in creating multiple strains of insulin and testing them to find the one that works best. We will then purify that strain and compare it to the original version of insulin glargine (Lantus). It will also cover our operating budget so that Project Insulin can continue to grow.
Why now?
The science to make insulin is well known, the patents have expired, and the tools already exist. What is missing is the will to act, and we are no longer waiting for someone else to fix this problem.
How are you funded?
We’re supported by institutional funders, individual donors, and community partners. The money goes straight to the work. Consider investing in Project Insulin.
How can I help?
You can support us by donating, volunteering your skills, or simply spreading the word. Every bit of support brings affordable insulin closer to those who need it most.
